ADMISSION PROCESS:
Step 1: Submit Application
The application process begins when you submit a completed application form. With the application form, the following documentation is required: report cards (June from last year, all of the current years reports), any psycho-educational reports or assessments, a small photograph and the application fee. You are encouraged to tell us about your son’s interests, achievements and special qualities.
Step 2: Interview
An interview is provided for all those who submit an application regardless of grade level. Parents will be contacted to arrange an individual appointment. Interviews are generally held between November and March.
Step 3: Tour
The appointment will begin with a tour of the school for parents and their son. This is an opportunity for families to see the school and for us to get to know you and your son. The tour concludes for your son with a one on one meeting with the SHS teacher/assessor. We strongly suggest for those families applying to either JK or SK to come to an Open House prior to your admissions appointment.
Step 4: Assessment
Kindergarten – Grade One
Our in-house assessment will consist of grade appropriate tasks. At the Kindergarten and Grade One levels, we observe such things as social and emotional development, cognitive skills in math and language and your son’s ability to separate comfortably from his parents. We find that the boys are more relaxed and at ease when these expectations have been explained. We request that JK and SK candidates please bring a favourite book and family photo to facilitate conversation. No toys please.
Grade 2 – Grade 8
Your son will complete in-house grade appropriate Language Arts and Math tasks in order to assess his current academic standing and ability. These tasks provide insight into how well your son will manage with our curriculum. Candidates will be expected to engage in casual conversation with the assessor. It is not necessary to prepare your son in any way for our assessment; this is not a pass or fail test, but rather an opportunity to gain further insight into your son’s academic position.
Step 5: Interview with Parents
While your son is being assessed, parents will meet with the Admission Manager. This is an opportunity for parents to inquire about SHS and to elaborate on their son. As well, The Admission Manager will be looking for further clarification regarding your son's academic and personal profile.
Step 6: Notification
JK, SK and Grade 1 applicants will be notified of acceptance from mid to end of February. All other grade levels will be notified after our re-registration process is complete. Offers of admission will be made in early to mid March, depending on the grade level and the availability of places.
