The Sterling Hall School Arts Programs
Visual Arts
From Pollock to Picasso, from painting to
print-making, students from JK to Grade Eight explore the past and present
through the eyes of many artists. The emphasis of our innovative Visual Arts
program is on nurturing imaginative thinking. The program is committed to the
development of creativity, the acquisition of skills and knowledge of Art
History. Studio projects are reinforced by: art appreciation activities, slide
shows, drawing journals, reflections, all with a reference to Art History,
varying themes or current exhibitions.
Enhanced by the Visiting Artist
Program, field trips, and the use of technology, students are challenged to
express their uniqueness through creating original artwork. The boys have
opportunities to participate in many extracurricular art clubs such as:
Animation Club, Young Curators Club, Pottery Club, and others.
Music
The Sterling Hall School for Boys has an active and
engaging music program for students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. Junior
kindergarten to Grade 4 students focus on choral, recorder, melodica and Orff
studies while Grade 5 to 8 is geared toward instrumental performance with an
emphasis on creativity and expression. Through improvisation, composition and
arranging, students begin to take ownership of the music they play, and
classroom recording sessions allow for self-evaluation and assessment of
individual and group progress. The SHS Music Web Portal is an interactive
practice and reference too for instrumental music students. Extracurricular
opportunities include Choirs, Jazz Band, Brazilian Samba Band, Songwriting
Clubs, and Pop Bands as well as performing at Friday assemblies, annual Holiday
and Spring concerts and providing live music for the school play.
Drama
A drama program has recently been established at SHS.
The program is designed to connect with and enhance existing school curricula.
By interpreting scripts, creating their own scenes and reflecting on the
experience, the boys have the opportunity to develop social skills, empathy,
self-confidence and problem-solving in an active and enjoyable way. Friday
assemblies and a spring play production showcase emerging talent from SK to
Grade 8.
