About SHS

History & Purpose

The Sterling Hall School was founded in 1987 when Darlene Ferris and a small group of dedicated teachers realized her vision of a progressive and caring education for young boys.

The school began with 17 students and has grown to an enrollment of 300 boys, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8, under the leadership of Principal Ian Robinson. Throughout this period of growth, SHS has maintained a devotion to its founding principles: small class size, a nurturing environment, academic, artistic, and athletic excellence, and character development.

The 21st Century will be fast-paced, constantly changing, culturally diverse, technologically driven, and media-saturated. This creates a learning context requiring a new approach to education that is designed to help our students truly flourish in the future. As stated by educator Karl Fisch, "Students are preparing for jobs that don't exist, using technologies that haven't been invented, to solve problems that we don't even know are problems yet."

SHS has a responsibility to prepare its students for the future. Research and inquiry skills, the confidence to communicate clearly, and the ability to be effective in teams are a few of the portable skills that will contribute to the success of our students in a changing world.
