Student Government

The boys of The Sterling Hall School play an active role in the day-to-day organizing of school activities and events. An important part of this involvement is the Student Council, which includes boys at every level, from JK to Grade 8, and provides representation for every boy at the school.

The Student Council is a student-run committee that sets goals and objectives for the school year, promotes school spirit, organizes and implements community service activities, and allows SHS students to have a voice in planning events, clubs, and initiatives.

Participation in the Student Council teaches boys important leadership skills. They learn how to plan a large project, how to work as part of a group, and how to lead a team. They also learn that, by becoming involved in larger issues, they can indeed make a difference.

Student council structure

The Student Council is led by the Head Boy, with the support of six Prefects from Grade 8, one representative from each class in JK - Grade 7, and two Faculty Advisors.

Every Grade 8 boy plays a leadership role in our student government. At the end of Grade 7, the boys write letters explaining how they would like to become involved the following year.

Based on these submissions, the Head Boy, Prefects, and House Captains are chosen. Each Prefect represents a key area of student life: Academic Life, Arts, Athletics, Citizenship, Communications, and Environment. Boys are encouraged to tailor their roles according to their interests and abilities.

Student Council representatives for each grade are elected by their classmates in September (representatives from JK and SK are chosen by the teachers). Each elected student works with his class to decide on initiatives for community service and school events. These ideas are presented to the Prefects, who in turn present them to the Principal for final approval.

Prefects meet with the Faculty Advisors each week to maintain smooth organization of school events. The full Student Council meets every two weeks.

The Head Boy and Prefects are also responsible for planning and running the Friday Assemblies. This requires them to set an agenda, organize Faculty or student speakers, and host the Assembly.
