SHS and Beyond

We are often asked where our SHS graduates go to secondary school. Our students graduate with a sense of purpose and a vision of who they are. They are prepared for success as leaders, innovators, and lifetime learners. See what schools our graduates have decided to attend (over the past 5 years).

SHS Alumni

Our Alumni are actively engaged inside and outside the classroom. Please take a moment to get to know a few recent SHS graduates:

Sam Danniels Class of '96
Now 23, Sam suffered a serious biking accident in 2005 at the age of 19 and is paralyzed from just below his shoulders down. Sam has competed for Canada, his goal since the accident, in the Paralympics - Men’s Downhill and Men’s Super G in March 2010.

Wesley Pang Class of ’96
Wesley is currently an Associate Attorney in the Litigation Group at Shearman & Sterling LLP in Manhattan. After graduating from SHS, he went to UCC, and then received an undergraduate degree in Business Management at King's College London in the UK. Wesley then completed a double-degree program, receiving an LL.B (Hons) from King’s and a Juris Doctor from Columbia University School of Law. During law school, he competed on behalf of the UK in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and interned for the United Nations Human Rights Committee.

Andrew Nobrega Class of ’99
Andrew is the first Old Boy to join the Environmental Committee. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a BSc. in 2007, and is currently the Director of Research and Design for the sustainability consulting firm Ecovert, a Toronto company that specializes in green buildings and sustainable business management. Andrew recently gave a presentation to the SHS Green School Committee on ways the school can measure and reduce its environmental footprint. Andrew will help identify opportunities for Sterling Hall to further its environmental stewardship, and help us work towards LEED certification until September, when he will take a leave of absence from Ecovert to attend Oxford University to pursue a Masters in Science, Environmental Change and Management.

Transition Process

At Sterling Hall our role is to guide, counsel, recommend, refer, and suggest to Parents and boys the best options for secondary schools. We are facilitators in this process, supporting our boys in every way we can.

We provide many opportunities for Parents and boys to learn more about the secondary options in the GTA.

  1. Transition Guidelines – A Handbook for Parents and boys to guide them through the process of considering and applying to secondary schools.
  2. Parents Only Q & A Panel Evening – Taking place in early fall. This is an opportunity for parents to ask questions to our panel of Faculty/Staff, Parents, and alum to gain insights and information on the transition process from SHS.
  3. School Fair - In mid fall, SHS invites approximately 20 secondary schools to set up a booth in our gym. Grade 7 and 8 Parents and boys are welcome to drop in and visit with the various schools - ask questions and meet the Admission Directors. This is a very popular event, one that many of our Southern Ontario secondary school Admissions Directors consider a priority to attend.
  4. Faculty-Student Mentorship Program - Every boy in Grade 8 is matched with a mentor of his choice. The goal of this mentorship is to provide support and guidance to our Grade 8 students as they move through the hectic pace of their graduating year. It is a busy year, with a leadership role for all Grade 8 students, preparation for school interviews, extensive extra curricular interests and a clear desire and motivation to produce their very best academic work. Our mentors help our boys to manage their schedules, learn new skills, and gain insights into themselves. As this is such a crucial and pivotal time of their lives, what better than supporting boys to become the best men they can be.
  5. Secondary Tracking Education Program (STEP) – This is a new program we have implemented which facilitates the collection of data from our graduates to help inform our curricular decisions.

Our success in placing SHS graduates in Toronto’s most prestigious secondary schools is a testament to the boys, Faculty and Staff of SHS. In this last year, 94% of the SHS grads were admitted to at least one of their top two choices of secondary schools. This figure is consistent with previous years.
