The Sterling Hall School Physical and Health Education
The Physical Education program at Sterling Hall offers all students an opportunity to learn new athletic skills and tactics, participate in competitive and co-operative games, work on teamwork and sportsmanship and leadership. By the end of grade 8 a student will have learned the importance of taking ownership of his well-being and personal development. The foundation of physical success entails developing sportsmanship, physical effort, cardio-fitness, teamwork, strength and flexibility, awareness, initiative, sport specific skills and gamesmanship. Through self-assessment of his participation in the extensive SHS running and fitness programs, he will learn the benefits of developing the fundamental skills necessary to pursue and enjoy a healthy physical lifestyle.
The SHS Health program is designed so that by the end of grade 8 a student will have a fundamental knowledge and understanding of the physical, psychological and social implications, both positive and negative, of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sexuality, personal safety, hygiene, relationships, puberty, STD’s, and pregnancy in order to make age-appropriate decisions that will help them to enhance a healthy lifestyle.
The overall goal of Physical and Health Education program at The Sterling Hall School is twofold. One is to help the students develop a love for physical activity and to have them engage in regular, meaningful physical activity as the means by which an enhanced quality of life can be attained. The goal of the Health component is to arm students with the knowledge and tools that are needed to make healthy lifestyle decisions about personal hygiene, human anatomy, their physical and emotional relationships with others, The theme of the Health Component is: Information, Self-Esteem, Choices, Decision Making.
