Student Life

Woven through all of The Sterling Hall School’s endeavours is the objective of developing young men of character and leaders for the 21st century.  The school seeks to teach students from an early age the meaning and importance of personal integrity, respect for the rights of others, self-discipline, and an appreciation of traditional values, including the ability to work with others and a sense of social responsibility.  The extra-curricular content of our program supports the goal to continue the shaping of responsible young people who will contribute to their society.

The Sterling Hall School has a proud tradition of serving our community: local, national and international.  Our Community Service Program, Global Awareness –Reaching Out to the World, gives students the opportunity for positive action and involvement in a range of activities. Projects have included working with Free the Children to build a new school in Sri Lanka after the tsunami, individual technology instruction at Baycrest Senior Centre, and an environmental clean-up of Meadow Creek Park.  Our program develops social awareness, self-reliance and a capacity to relate effectively to the needs of others.  In addition, the service learning component of our Stewardship Program allows each student in each grade to make a difference.

Our students learn about leadership first-hand through the many opportunities offered both inside and outside of the classroom.  Older boys mentor younger students through initiatives such as Book Buddies, Techno Buddies and House activities.  A Student Council is elected by the students each year and representatives from each homeroom, led by the Head Boy and Prefects, meet monthly to set goals, plan initiatives, and promote school spirit.  Our House System provides our boys with a variety of opportunities to work together and to have fun in events such as House Games, SHS Olympics and Shark Spirit Days.  Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of clubs including robotics, chess, cooking and drama.

To achieve personal and educational success in the 21st century, boys must be able to make sound decisions, solve problems, plan effectively, work independently and in a group, and communicate well.  A carefully planned and guided Mentorship Program helps our Grade 8 students to acquire these skills.  In addition, each Grade 8 boy at The Sterling Hall School has the unique opportunity of serving in a leadership role throughout his graduating year.  September’s week-long Wilderness Leadership Training expedition to Temagami provides an excellent start to a rewarding experience.
