SHS is an independent day school for boys from JK to Grade 8. Our mission is to inspire and empower each boy through his formative years.

Six-Step Process to Admission

Step 1: Visit

Plan to visit the school by attending our Open House in October, experiencing a student-led Assembly or scheduling a tour. These are wonderful ways to see the school in action!

Step 2: Apply

The application process begins when you submit a completed application form online. In order for an application to be processed we ask for the following documentation:

  • report cards (June from last year and all of the current year's reports)
  • supporting documents that will allow the admissions team to better understand your son (Ex: psycho-educational reports or assessments, IEP)
  • a small photo of your son and/or family
  • copy of his birth certificate
  • a one-time application fee of $150

Step 3: Assessment

Group and individual assessments take place in a warm and welcoming environment. Assessments allow our admissions team to better know and understand your son to ensure that SHS is the best fit.

Please note that we strongly urge you to come to an Open House prior to your admissions assessment.

Kindergarten - Grade 1

Our in-house assessment consists of grade appropriate activities. We will observe your son's social and emotional development, his cognitive skills in math and language, his listening skills and his ability to separate comfortably from his parents and follow teacher direction.

Grade 2 - Grade 8

Your son will complete in-house, grade appropriate Language Arts and Math tasks in order to assess his current academic knowledge and ability. These tasks provide insight into how well your son will manage our curriculum. Candidates will be expected to engage in casual conversation with the assessor. It is not necessary to prepare your son in any way for our assessment; this is not a pass or fail test, but rather a gauge to gain further insight into your son's academic and personal profile.

Step 4: Interview

Parents may be contacted to arrange a meeting regarding your son. Interviews are generally held between November and February. Parent meetings may take place after the student's assessment, to give the admissions team a better understanding of your son’s learning profile and interests, as well as his fit with SHS.

Step 5: Communication

Parents of applicants for Primary Grades will be notified of admission offers by early January. All other grade levels will be notified after our re-enrolment process is complete. If we are unable to offer a place to your son, he will be placed in our accepted wait pool until a place becomes available.

Step 6: Registration

Registration documents must be returned with the first instalment fee by the date indicated in order for a space to be reserved for the student.

Policies: Siblings, Wait Pool and Application Forwarding

The Sterling Hall School has implemented an Early Notification Program for siblings. This gives a preference to siblings of currently enrolled families and boys of Faculty and Staff a preference. This preference is not a guarantee of acceptance, or a space in a particular grade. Preference is given only if the applicant is qualified. Acceptance is only offered at the school's discretion. Families still follow the standard application process.

Wait Pool Policy

Wait pools remain in effect after the school year starts. The admissions team reviews all applicants in the wait pool. A qualified candidate, based on the merit of the application and composition of the grade, will be offered a place.

Forwarding an Application

If an applicant forwards an application to the following academic year, they will not be required to submit another application. However, if it has been more than one year since submitting an application, a new application is required.
