September 30, was a very important day for our school and for Canada. Orange Shirt Day, now designated the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by the Canadian government, is an opportunity for all of us to learn about and to honour the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It is an opportunity for us all to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.
Throughout the day, SHS boys had meaningful conversations about the devastating impact of residential schools and continued their learning about Truth and Reconciliation. Our Teachers organized age-appropriate activities for the boys and took time to have teachable moments throughout the day to explore the idea of residential schools and their impact on Indigenous communities. We also investigated how we can use our VIA Character Traits to acknowledge and build our own communities, be it a cohort or SHS at large, that fosters compassion, understanding and positive self-esteem in others. In class, our boys participated in sharing circles, enjoyed activities, watched videos, produced artwork and even created a website!
Many of us at Sterling Hall showed our recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children's sense of self-esteem and well-being, and re-affirmed our commitment to ensure that everyone matters.
Our boys and our faculty and staff wore orange shirts as a way to encourage learning and knowledge. Thank you to all who purchased the T-shirts from the Online Shark Shop. To show our commitment to the cause, a portion of our sales will be donated to the Orange Shirt Society. Please continue to purchase Orange Shirt Day T-shirts while supplies last.
