Social-Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is at the heart of the SHS curriculum.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process by which students learn to understand and manage their emotions, set and achieve positive goals, learn how to grow their sense of self and co-regulation, feel and show empathy, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions.

SEL also leads to improved behaviour, attitudes, and academic performance and reduces emotional distress and conduct issues.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is at the heart of the SHS curriculum. We follow the Second Step™ SEL program from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8, via our Health and Community program. This curriculum ensures that each boy has the opportunity to learn about, discuss and reflect on his emotions and experiences in a supportive, empathetic community with peers and teachers. Families are also engaged via take-home lessons so they can continue the conversation at home.
